 PESTICIDE PIT

SITE DESCRIPTION

The Pesticide Pit was in operation between 1968 and 1974 for the disposal of small quantities of insecticides and herbicides. This site is located approximately 25 feet east of the Winnebago School House (Bldg 500-30-6) on an upland terrace surrounded by agricultural fields. The School House is currently vacant and was fenced for safety reasons. The Pesticide Pit was a small plywood structure (8’x8’x3’) lined with limestone and polyester resin geomembrane. However, the integrity of the structure that contained these wastes was questionable. The pit was capped with clay of unknown thickness during the late 1970s to early 1980s.

The PA/SI was completed in 1991, and the RI in May 1996.

In 1995 based on preliminary RI results, 144cy of soils were excavated and the site was backfilled with pea gravel and clean soil. Follow-on groundwater sampling and analyses indicated all contaminants were below federal action levels. Remedial actions were completed in 1996. The soils were transported to an off-site incinerator for disposal.

USACHPPM has completed a review of the data and concurs with the recommendation that no further action is required.

Spring 2001 and June 2004 groundwater sampling indicated slightly elevated levels of chromium.

A revised draft OU-3 RI/FS was submitted to EPA for review in April 2008.

CLEANUP STRATEGY

This site is included in the PBC awarded in 2004.

This site is considered Response Complete and requires no further action for soil as documented in the Draft Final Report for Rapid Response Removal Actions dated January 1996.

The IRP will be responsible for groundwater contamination which is being evaluated in the OU3 RI/FS.  The recommendation for the groundwater is institutional controls, monitored natural attenuation, and long term monitoring as document in the revised draft OU-3 RI/FS.
